Roulette is a wheel-based casino game where you place bets on where the ball will land, then the wheel resolves the result. The game is simple to enter because the bet menu is visual: you can bet on a single number, a small group of numbers, or broader outcomes like red/black.

Wheel types and why they matter

The biggest difference between roulette tables is the wheel. European and French roulette use a single zero, while American roulette uses both 0 and 00. That extra pocket makes American roulette less favorable in the long run, so confirming the wheel type is the first step before you judge the value of any bet.

Bets and standard payouts

Roulette bets are usually split into inside and outside. Inside bets cover specific numbers or small groups (straight-up, split, street, corner, six line) and can pay large multipliers but miss more often. Outside bets cover broader outcomes (red/black, odd/even, high/low, dozens, columns) and hit more frequently with smaller payouts. Standard payouts are consistent across most tables (for example, a straight-up bet pays thirty-five to one), unless the table rules state otherwise.

RTP, house edge, and special zero rules

Roulette RTP is mainly driven by how many zero pockets exist and whether the table uses special rules on even-money bets. Some single-zero tables use rules that soften the impact of zero on even-money bets (often called “la partage” or “en prison”), which can improve the effective return on those bets. Many tables do not use these rules, so the rules panel is always worth checking.

Volatility and session feel

Volatility is mostly a choice you make. Straight-up betting creates high variance with occasional big wins, while outside bets create smoother sessions with smaller swings. The wheel type does not change how variance feels spin-to-spin, but it does change the long-run cost of playing.

What to verify before you play

Quick checklist (one list):

  • Single-zero vs double-zero wheel
  • Any special zero rule on even-money bets (if present)
  • Live vs RNG format and round timer speed
  • Table limits for inside and outside bets
  • Any non-standard payout notes or side bets listed in the rules
